Recent Commission.

Recently I had the great pleasure of creating a single gold disc earring for a lovely client who’s brief called for a clean simple design that didn’t require any clasps or hinges, yet remained secure and solid enough for everyday wear.

In the initial consultation, we discussed, shape, size, weight and hook options. From there I drew up a few designs to solidify the direction we were heading in .

Having never made an earring like this, I decided to start by making a silver prototype which allowed the client to test the effectiveness of my clasp-free design along with it’s overall comfort. After a week or so of the client wearing the silver prototype, we made a few small tweaks to the design and from there I went into crafting the final piece in solid 9ct yellow gold.

The end result is a beautiful buttery soft yellow disc earring, super simple and clean design with enough weight and strength to feel significant and solid, while remaining light and easy to wear.

During in the process of creating the gold disc I chanced upon a sweet happenstance that I couldn’t pass up. When cutting out the negative space in the disc, a smaller gold disc remained, the positive space from the cut-out. I felt like these two pieces somehow needed to stay together, so I cleaned up the edges of the small complementary disc, soldered a post to its back and in doing so created a mini disc stud, which was gifted to my client’s beautiful partner. Two individual pieces that together make a whole.
