Sapphires - all the colours of the rainbow!
Sapphires are most commonly associated with the colour blue, however did you know they actually come in almost every colour under the sun!? From intense pinks, vibrant yellows, luscious greens and whimsical purples, sapphires really do embody all the colours of the rainbow. Along with their expansive colour pallet, sapphires are one of the most hardwearing gemstones around, sitting just under diamonds in the Moh’s scale of hardness. Diversity in colour and their durability make sapphires one of the most enduring and coveted gemstones used in creating special jewellery pieces.
Sapphires can be found all over the globe, from Africa, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand to name a few, as well as from our very own Australia. Australia produces some of the most beautiful rich blues, greens, and yellows, (very much mirroring our incredible natural landscape!!). Australia is also one of the main sources of the spectacular Parti Sapphire, which has the distinctive characteristic of having multiple bands of colour, most commonly blue, green and yellow, in the one stone. No two parti sapphires are ever the same which makes them all the more magical and unique when designing a highly personal pieces.
Being a natural material formed deep in the earth millions of years ago, sapphires more often than not come with an inclusion or two, some more visible to the naked eye than others. These inclusions are a part of its mineral and crystal composition, which, rather than detract from the stone’s beautify, can greatly add to it’s one of a kind magic. I highly encourage clients to keep and open mind and embrace the various quirks and characteristics of natural sapphires, opting for a beautiful stone that reflect their personality and story.
I work closely with a small selection of grass roots gemstone merchants who pride themselves on supplying quality stones from reputable sources, with a few of my merchants personally fossiking for and cutting their own stones.
When working with clients, I always do my best to source stones as close to their request as I possible. However, it’s also important to remember that being a natural and unique resource, not all stone colours are always readily available, so some flexibly is recommended when embarking on bespoke commissions. With an open mind you never know what you might fall in love with!
